The Capital city of Egypt, Cairo, is where you will find most of the countries pyramids. The pyramid you should not miss on your tour of the pyramids is the Great Pyramid of Giza, this was built as a tomb for the fourth dynasty leader. The pyramid stands more than 140 metres high and contains two million blocks of stone. There are three chambers in the pyramid, the first being the foundation chamber that the other two were built on. The other two chambers being the Kings and the Queens.
While on a pyramid tour you should also make time to see the fascinating structure of the Sphinx, which has the body of a lion and the head of Pharaoh.
It is thought that the Egyptian leaders built the pyramids so big to make a statement about their strength and power, with smaller pyramids and tombs being built for the leaders family members.
When on your tour of the pyramids, you should make time to visit the amazing sound and light show in Giza. During the show the Sphinx is highlighted and it is the Sphinx that tells the story of the history of the pyramids and their creators. The mummification temple, the Sphinx and the desert are all lit up using laser beams and light projection. If you organise a private tour, the tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you directly to the light show.
Tours are available which take you by camel or horse back to see the sunrise or sunset at the Giza pyramids. You will see the pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus. Cheop was a pharaoh of Egypts Old Kingdom and Chephren was his son, while Mykerinus was a pharaoh of Egypts fourth dynasty.
In Sakkara, near Cairo, are pyramids and ruins from the Old Kingdom, there is a step pyramid there. Step pyramids were built before the pyramids with smooth sides. You can also see beautiful paintings in some of the nearby tombs. Close by at Dashour, you can visit the Red Pyramid, you can actually climb down into the Red Pyramid. The inside of the Red Pyramid is completely different to that of the Kings and Queens chambers in the Great Pyramid of Giza.
